Perimenopause Creeping In?

Writer: Stacey BaganzStacey Baganz

Addressing symptoms now will help alleviate more dramatic symptoms in the future.

If you’re like many women, when you think about menopause, you think of hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and weight gain… right?

Some or all of these may end up happening, but for many women just transitioning to menopause……..in the stage known as PERIMENOPAUSE…… more subtle symptoms may creep in. Tuning in to, and addressing these signals now will help alleviate more dramatic symptoms down the road.

Usually, the first hormone that starts to decline in this process is our friend progesterone. Progesterone calms us, and keeps the nasty side of estrogen in check. During perimenopause estrogen levels start to become erratic, and with progesterone packing up and taking a vacation, estrogen is left to it’s own accord, leading to unwanted changes like…….

  • Mood swings, anxiety and/or irritability that you used to not have

  • Crazy sugar cravings

  • Low energy levels and difficulty sleeping

  • An increase in allergies, especially around your period

  • Belly bloat, constipation, or indigestion

  • Thinning hair

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Your cycle is becoming more irregular, longer, or heavier

  • Irregular or abnormally fast/slow heart rate

  • Feeling pretty unsexy

  • You’re eating and working out the exact same as you’ve always done and those pounds are creeping on.

Is this you? As we age, everything changes, especially our metabolism. Getting a jumpstart now to rebalance it all, specifically your lifestyle and diet choices, will make a huge impact on how things play out when menopause is in full swing. And for women experiencing these symptoms it’s important to consider whether hormonal imbalance may be at the root of the problem.

The good news is we can conquer this battle by prioritizing the following:

1. Gut issues have to be tackled first. Because our hormones and their proper function depend on specific vitamins and minerals to do their job. If your digestion is off in any way, then you’re not getting in the nutrients you need. Couple this with poor diet and it’s a recipe for disaster. Functional testing allows us to see what’s off in your gut, and what nutrients you specifically need to bring yourself back into balance.

2. You have to understand where you are at in your hormone journey, and evaluating adrenal health (stress levels!) at the same time is critical. Too much stress causes every hormone to be out of whack. Evaluating these 2 together with the The Dutch Complete hormone test gives you the most accurate picture of what your body is making, and how its metabolizing these hormones.

3. Herbal supplements and specific vitamins during perimenopause can help tremendously too. Adrenal adaptogens, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium glycinate, Vitamin C and Vitamin B5 are some of the key players. Sometimes too, adding in an over-the-counter progesterone cream can really help ease the transition and take away unwanted symptoms.

It’s all about knowing your biochemistry, and then giving your body what it needs to fill in the gaps and rebalance itself. Reach out to work with us to help you devise a plan specifically tailored to what your body needs. Nobody deserves to put up with unwanted symptoms, taking away from being your best self. When your hormones are happy, so is your life!
